WHAT IS LONG BEACH SKETCH/PROV?

Great things belong together: peanut butter and chocolate; the saxophone and 1980s soft rock; Abbott & Costello and Frankenstein (I know, those are technically – oh, you got the idea). In that spirit, sketch and improv comedy are certainly worth such a combined celebration, and Long Beach Sketch/Prov is a festival looking to bring both worlds together under one roof this President’s Day weekend, where you’ll see the very best of improv and sketch comedy back to back to back.

Long Beach Sketch/Prov is a joint production between Long Beach comedy troupe The Upperclassmen and the Long Beach Playhouse, located just off Pacific Coast Highway and Anaheim St.

SURE, BUT I WANT NUMBERS.

The festival is a two-night event, Friday & Saturday, February 16-17, 2018, from 7PM until 11PM in the Long Beach Playhouse’s intimate, 98-seat Studio Theater. Tickets are $8 per night (we’re a cheap date). There’s also a bar in the lobby for you to responsibly and affordably imbibe. Happy now?

WILL WE BE A GOOD FIT FOR LONG BEACH SKETCH/PROV?

If you’re funny. But, more seriously, Long Beach Sketch/Prov prides itself on openness, inclusivity, and freedom of expression. As long as your act isn’t predicated on being a jerk or creating an unsafe environment for our audience and performers, our doors are always open.

OK, BUT WHY DO I WANT TO SUBMIT MY TROUPE TO LONG BEACH SKETCH/PROV?

Stop shouting at me! Long Beach Sketch/Prov is a great event for comedy troupes of different stripes to meet and mingle (consensually), build community (consensually), try out bold and unusual material or your SNL demo reel all for an eager audience (no tickling, please), and just make everyone laugh (I can’t stress the “no-tickle” policy enough). Also, with an intimate space, a bar in the lobby, and $8 tickets, it’s an affordable audience destination.

ALRIGHT, HOW DO I SUBMIT? DO I SPIT IN A TUBE AND WAIT 6-8 WEEKS?

We don’t need your DNA (…yet). Just scroll down on this page to the Submission Form. We’ll need your basic contact info, a list of your performers, and links to previous improv or sketch sets so we can get a good idea of your comic sensibilities. Are you a sketch group that hasn’t filmed any live sketches? Submit a PDF of your full script instead (link on the Submission form).

MY TROUPE DOES BOTH SKETCH AND ‘PROV. CAN WE SUBMIT FOR BOTH?

Of course! Be sure then to include both a link to a full improv performance and sketch performance so we can see both. If accepted, we may ask you to perform only as a sketch or improv act, so please specify which you prefer in the drop-down on the Submissions form.

IS THERE A SUBMISSION FEE FOR ACTS?

Long Beach Sketch/Prov thinks there’s nothing worse than making performers pay to play. Sadly, however, web maintenance and overhead ain’t free, so we charge a submission fee of $5 per act that goes to keep everything running tight and the overall ticket price down for audiences. We think that’s a pretty economical deal that won’t break the bank for any cash-strapped comedian hopping from boxcar to boxcar.
