The Pickup Artists (TPA) is Minnesota's first and only acapella musical narative group. They make up the songs and the story AND are their own backup singers! they have to be seen to be believed.Individually they have trained at HUGE & Brave New Workshop Improvisation Theaters in Minneapolis. Each member began singing and performing at a young age. Their list of other theatrical and musical training and experience includes: British American Drama Academy, St. Olaf Theatre, University of Nebraska Choir, Concordia College, The Improv Retreat, Jimmy Carrane's Art of Slow Comedy, Workshops at the Guthrie Theater, and SwingSet Acapella Quartet/Trio.
Under the musical direction of Andrew Berkowitz of the nationally renown "Six Appeal Vocal Band", TPA continues to grow musically, weaving together a story in a musical structure. Regular guest improv coaches also help TPA stay at the top of their game and continually raise the bar.
Since forming the group during the Spring of 2015, they have been coached by Joe Rapp (Bearded Men), Tom Reed (Brave New Workshop) and Jill Bernard (Huge Theater and other awesome things). In April 2016, TPA had the privilege of working with internationally renowned Amy " Bob" Engelhardt--songwriter, performer and a 14 year member of the Grammy-nominated The Bobs. They are also seeking collaberation/guidance from Lojo Russo (folk song writer and performer.)
TPA is working to incorporate more rhythm and dance into their structure, because creating the music, lyrics and story line apparently are NOT enough of a challenge.
TPA performs full length (25-60 minutes, depending on the venue) musicals a cappella. TPA also offers workshops of 12-20 people that focus on teaching participants to listen to each other and harmonize.
